Basfords Win Basford Cup
Jim and Mary Basford initiated the very first golf outing to benefit The Village Network 27 years ago. This past Friday they finally got their names listed as winners on The Basford Cup. The winning foursome, sponsored by the couple, included Bob Berus, Troy Matheny, Greg Basford and founding father Jim Basford.
Besides bragging rights, the group won five days and four nights on The Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail in Alabama and $1,000 in spending money.
Today's Buckeye Container-Village Network Golf Classic is much different than the early ones according to Mrs. Basford. The first years were celebrity golf outings featuring Cleveland sports giants and news celebrities and hosting maybe 20 players.
This year's event boasted 35 foursomes at the Wooster Country Club and grossed over $75,000 for The Village Network.
In addition to the Grand Championship Team winner, there were three other flight winners; The J.M. Smucker Co. with Eric Badertscher, Bob Ellis, Jim Ellis and Shannon Shinaberry; Adena Corp. with Jack Ball, Tom Blunk, Aaron Bond and Glenn Guttenberg; and EMBARQ Ladies with Kathy Daniels, Joan Ellis, Chris Scott and Pam Zeigler.
Trish Barille, won first place in the helicopter ball drop which was a 4-day/3night trip to Myrtle Beach and $1,000. Second place winner Randy Benore took home professionally fitted golf clubs while third place winner Justin McCarthy received $300.
The Village Network has been focused on shaping productive, responsible youth for over 60 years and has an award-winning history of success.
